Reggae legends UB40 are coming back to Leeds in the autumn leg of their tour “Getting over the Storm”. UB40 began their musical career in Birmingham in 1978 and now have sold over 70 million records sold worldwide with more than 50 British singles in the singles charts.
Reflecting the cosmopolitan nature of multicultural Birmingham, the band comprised of a variety of ethnicities, including Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Yemeni and Jamaican heritage.
Their music genre is reggae fusion, a mixture of reggae, jazz, pop and dub music. Inspired by the left wing politics of their working class roots, the group not only promoted their politics in their songs, they also regularly marched against the National Front and participated in anti-racism concerts.
Their albums ‘Signing off’ and ‘Presenting arms’ addressed the political issues of the day with songs like ‘One in Ten’, which attacked Margaret Thatcher for the country’s high unemployment rate.
In fact, the name UB40 comes from the official ‘signing on’ document one had to complete in order to obtain unemployment benefit from the UK government. Funnily enough, the name of their first album was called ‘Signing Off’, indicating the band’s members were no longer claiming unemployment benefit, having successfully launching their music careers!
Some of their greatest hits include ‘I can’t help falling in love with you’ (used in the movie Sliver), ‘Red Red Wine’ and their version of ‘I’ve got you babe’. UB40 have so many great songs that a blog like this does not give justice to their musical talents. We recommend you listen to their songs on YouTube and if you appreciate their music download their albums from Amazon or iTunes.
